Meeting Minutes April 20, 2019

EAA Chapter 1167

Old Business:

• Doug Floyd will be our new Young Eagles Coordinator.

• Fly-in planned for May 18^th. We plan to have hamburgers and hot dogs as well as chicken bog.

New Business:

• Carl Knuth will be out official Technical Advisor.

• The Chapter is in need of a flight advisor.

• The Chapter needs to find a candidate for next year’s Air Academy. Someone that desires to make aviation their career. Ages 16 – 18 are eligible.

Main Discussion:

• Discussed the changes in the works in the light sport category.  Also the drivers license and medical requirements for flight certificate.

• Discussed the quality of the airshow. Most were a bit disappointed with the show itself. They were impressed with the F-35 performance. Aeroshell pre-show was the best part.

• Discussed the Ray Foundation scholarship focus on the flying rather than balancing flight and maintenance scholarships. Also discussed what appears to be the focus towards large chapters. 

• Carl noted how short general aviation is on mechanics. We discussed how Boeing and the airlines are picking up all the mechanic school graduates or training their own. Meanwhile our general aviation airplanes are in trouble for A&P’s and AI’s. A number of airplanes are sitting on the ramp at various airports out of annual because the AIs fast enough with all the inspections needed.

Tech Talk:

• Aluminum spar AD for Champs and other old wooden wing'd aircraft. Larry mentioned the use of ring nails for rib attachment in wood. 

• Someone helped Carl push the Nanchang into the hanger and bent an elevator.

• Doug discussed his alternator troubleshooting adventures. - Dead alternator at 9000 feet over the Appalachian Mountains. He discovered that the brushes are serviceable items and is in the process of repairing the alternator.
